In a games industry that has been increasingly filled with multiplayer shooters, it’s nice to see a new 3D platformer like Yooka-Laylee gain so much attention. The Kickstarter funded game is from the same creators of the dearly beloved Banjo Kazooie, which has already raised expectations for the title. Now that a new Gamescom trailer has been released, fans are wondering if this game will help revive the genre.
As most gamers know, 3D platformers have been mostly dead outside of Nintendo’s Super Mario games. That all changed quite a bit when the rebooted Ratchet and Clank game came out on the PS4 to tie-in with the movie. Not only was the game colorful and fun, but it was also much better than the film it was based on.
While Ratchet and Clank was a nice boost to the genre, Yooka-Laylee could be the spark that brings it back to prominence. It’s an entirely new IP after all, with entirely new characters that haven’t appeared anywhere else. Though the game is being billed as a successor to the Banjo Kazooie games, it could still provide a nice original experience to those that have never played the acclaimed Rare developed games.
Of course, fans should keep their expectations in check. One only has to look at Mighty No. 9, which was supposed to be the Mega Man successor everyone wanted but ended up feeling like an imitator with a few gimmicks. The game failed to meet expectations, with many finding it unchallenging and uninteresting, while the awful trailer turned off a lot of potential fans.
Still, what can be seen in the Gamescom 2016 trailer of the game looks really good. It seems like there will be a lot of fun levels to explore, with a number of unique features that should make the game a blast to play.
Will Yooka-Laylee bring life back to the 3D platforming genre? It’s a definite possibility, but only time will tell if the game will be any good. If it is half as fun as the previous Banjo Kazooie games, it will be a good game.
