Xbox One?s multiplayer car soccer game Rocket League has successfully reached the 1 million unique players milestone, developer Psyonix announced on Twitter.
The game that was released on February 17 turned out to be a hit among Xbox One users. ?YES! We have officially eclipsed more than 1 MILLION unique players @Xbox One! Thank you very much for continuing to support us!? Rocket League (@RocketLegue) posted.
The Wall Street Journal dubbed Rocket League as 2015?s surprise video game hit. It also grabbed The Game Awards 2015, where the studio bagged the best indie game and best sports game in 2015, Ecumenical News reveals.
But the most astonishing truth behind the game?s success is that it did not have a marketing scheme. It was just produced at the right place and right time and suited the players? taste. The game has now generated more than $50 million, an outstanding amount given its capital is only less than $2 million.
The studio?s founder and chief Dave Hagewood told Wall Street Journal, ?We paid the bills by working on some of the biggest games in the industry,? including Mass Effect 3 published by EA Games and Gears of Water by Microsoft.
Meanwhile, the studio?s marketing VP Jeremy Dunham revealed in an interview with Twitch that the game has already garnered $70 million in revenue since it has been released. This means that there was an additional $20 million from Xbox One release. Experiencing this series of achievement made the studio decide to do the game?s retail version.
On the other hand, Ecumenical News reports that Bill Kispert, Comcast?s executive vice president, reveals that the studio is currently attempting to obtain the license to place Knight Rider?s KITT in the DLC. As of now, the game is given the right to use the DeLorean in Back to the Future. They anticipate the game will be a huge trend among players.
