Despite repeated rumors since the past year, George R.R. Martin?s next in line book of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, The Winds of Winter novel, still has no concrete release date. So while online news sites and internet forums may peg a 2016 year-end launch or a rather much earlier release, there apparently is no substance to their claims.
Martin has even refrained from commenting over the release date of his forthcoming novel although he attended several literary festivals most recent of which was the Balticon Convention in May. He is also scheduled to appear in the Worldcon this August but won?t be making a release announcement as many expect as Martin clarified that in his ?NotABlog.?
So when can we likely see the sixth installment of the A Song of Ice and Fire series?
The disappointing answer is that there seems to be no possibility of an earlier release of The Winds of Winter. Apparently, the airing of HBO?s new Game of Thrones Season 6 has put Martin in a dilemma regarding the apparent direction his plotline will be heading. While his previous novels were already published way before the filming of a new season began, the sixth season caused plenty of problems as it ventured into areas not covered by the novel series. So in part, Martin had to give direction to HBO writers and, in part, HBO planned their own course to take the plotline.
With the airing of the new series, Martin is now in a dilemma on which story to focus on. Though he has not particularly revealed anything, Jon Snow?s fate especially after his resurrection in the drama series might have taken an altogether different turn in the books. With a number of storylines revealed in Season 6 and several fans spawning their own theories regarding the future of several other characters, it has become hard for Martin to ignore all that new stuff.
In fact, Martin is now likely adjusting his stories according to the Game of Thrones rather than the other way around. It has put at stake his own plans regarding the future of several characters. The recent previews of the novel series has several characters with independent storylines, while in the HBO drama, they seem to have been tied together to the main story arc. For example, Martin has planned storylines for Aeron Greyjoy, Arianne Martell and a new character called Aegon Targaryen. So it has become exceptionally difficult for Martin to pen down the whole series as he now has to make changes along the way as opposed to going with his original story.
Meanwhile, if you are more of the optimistic kind, there are several rumors feeding the frenzy of the fans. It has been hinted by more than many media reports that The Winds of Winter could be released by Martin at the World Science Fiction Convention called MidAmeriCon II in Kansas City, Missouri which runs August 17 to 21.
Others have even offered a much more ridiculous claim that both the sixth and seventh books of the series could be released together. Martin has supposedly written both The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring which could make it to the fans before the final seasons of the Game of Thrones air on television.
