Microsoft?has not mentioned anything about Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 yet but a recent report suggests that the Redmond-based tech giant already pre-installed the new OS version to its latest smartphones. Those handsets, dubbed as the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL, have been launched at the recent Mobile World Congress (MWC) event in Barcelona, Spain.
Powers latest Lumia models
Windows Central, a site dedicated to everything Microsoft-related, has published a report indicating that two new handset models announced at said electronics event are already running the unannounced Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 OS version. The site further said that users of other models will likely notice the same features this version will bring in an updated called Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2. This firmware upgrade will reportedly focus on Settings UI (user interface) improvement. Since Microsoft hasn?t confirmed it yet, a full changelog to describe all of its new features is not available, but you can read on and see what Windows Central has observed.
Quick access to Settings
Microsoft latest mobile OS version divides the Setting UI into various categories. One remarkable improvement is the ability to pin individual settings on the home screen which allows users to quickly change their handset?s configurations with just a few taps. It?s worth mentioning that this tweak was previously available via a number of third-party apps but it?s nice that Windows Phone is now offering it as a built-in feature.
The update also brings along a magnifying glass icon located at the bottom of the screen which can be used to directly search for settings, content, and applications.
Bluetooth Keyboard support
The software & hardware giant also unveiled a new portable keyboard at the MWC. The device is called Universal Foldable Keyboard and, as its name implies, it works with platforms such as iOS, Android, Windows 8 and 8.1 devices. What makes this gadget relevant to this article is that in its official details page, a fifth platform is mentioned — Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2.
Other enhancement includes a ?quick text? feature that allows users to set pre-defined phrases that they can paste within the keyboard and the ability to customize privacy settings by disabling camera access to particular applications.
