Why Konami Banned Kojima In Gaming Awards

By on

And for a surprising situation, Konami barred Kojima from appearing in an awards event.

The Game Awards 2015 has just concluded and surprisingly Hideo Kojima was not around at the event to accept his award. It turns out that he was not allowed to attend the Game Awards according to the announcement made by host and Game Awards creator Geoff Keighley, according to reports, one of the lawyers of Konami has prevented Hideo Kojima from attending and accepting the award for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. In return, Kiefer Sutherland accepted one of the awards for the game on his behalf.

Since Kojima is still have a non-compete with Konami until December, this is possible why they are preventing him from appearing to the event, though it is still unfortunate for him not to accept an award for his own game.

This is what Keighley mentioned at the Game Awards ?As you noticed, Hideo Kojima is not here with us tonight and I want to tell you a little about that. Mr. Kojima had every intention of being with us tonight, but unfortunately he was informed by a lawyer representing Konami just recently that he would not be allowed to travel to tonight?s awards ceremony to accept any awards. [crowd boos] He?s still under an employment contract. And it?s disappointing and it?s inconceivable to me that an artist like Hideo would not be allowed to come here and celebrate with his peers and his fellow teammates.?

This similar incident also happened in a different award. At the PlayStation Awards in Japan, Kojima was also not present on the event where Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain also won an award, a PR person from Konami accepted the award.

Kojima is expected to leave Konami by the end of the year as he needs to end the non-compete from the said company, though Konami denied that Kojima has resigned and they said was still on an extended vacation.
