Western Digital?s New My Book Duo Offers You Total Data Protection

By on

Western Digital, one of the world?s leading hard disk drive manufacturers, recently announced the launch of their latest desktop storage, the My Book Duo.

In the press release, Western Digital released the specifications of the storage device. The My Book Duo utilizes two drives, hardware-level RAID and USB 3.0 and is available in 4TB, 6TB, and 8TB capacities. It also comes with software that creates cloud and system-level backups for complete data protection.

The dual-drive design storage comes with the latest USB 3.0 connection that can transfer files of up to 290 MB/s. It is also optimized for small RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) environments. The My Book Duo is preconfigured in RAID 0 for maximum performance and capacity while you can opt to take advantage of using the RAID 1, which basically uses half of the disk capacity and store data as backup. In an unlikely case that the disk fails or data gets corrupted, the hard drive will retain a duplicate of all data files that you have stored. With this capability, you can never be worried of losing all your important files!

If that doesn?t satisfy you, the My Book Duo also comes with software that offers additional data protection. WD SmartWare Pro backup allows you to automatically backup your files and folders. Furthermore, you can also use your Dropbox account to integrate and backup your cloud storage files into your drive.

Additionally, the My Book Duo uses a comprehensive 256-bit AES hardware encryption and password protection to further provide data security at both hardware and software levels.

The My Book Duo also comes with an enclosure and a USB hub on the back in case you want to connect your mobile devices.

Personally, I think this is an overkill when it comes to data security. Having RAID 1 configuration will already be sufficient for most users and not to mention there are many cloud storages available in the web that provide data backup. But of course, when it comes to security, it never hurts to have enough.

The new My Book Duo can be availed online at and comes with a two-year regional warranty. Prices are at $279.99 USD for 4TB, $349.99 USD for 6TB, and $449.99 USD for the 8TB.

Are you willing to shell out this much money for this much data security? Tell us what you think.
