Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo episode 1 aired last night and several issues have been raised about its cast. The controversies surfaced amid its stiff competition with Lee Min Ho?s Legend of the Blue Sea.
The new MBC show is inspired by the true story of Jang Mi Ra, a female weightlifter. The series will follow her struggles in the sport as well as her experiencing love for the first time.
Lee Sung Kyung?s starring role
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo?s cast will be led by Lee Sung Kyung, who will play the starring role.
However, several fans discussed online that the actress? very slim frame is not fit for her character. ?[MBC is] miscasting [by getting] a slender model like Sung Kyung for a role of a weightlifter,? a fan commented in a Soompi report.
?She’s talented, but the misrepresentation of women in sports will be apparent in this drama,? another commenter pointed out.
Some also reminded that the 26-year-old stunner will be portraying a real-life character, hence the importance of her body type. ?This is the reason why I won’t be able to watch this,? one reader admitted said about the former Doctors star.
Nam Joo Hyuk as leading man
Showrunners held a press event prior to airing Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo episode 1. During the activity, reporters raised the controversy about cast members Lee Sung Kyung and Nam Joo Hyuk.
Ethical concerns were previously raised since the show?s main love team belongs to the same agency. Producing director Oh Hyun Jong explained the situation from their point of view.?
The show exec clarified that even YG Entertainment was ?burdensome? about the possible conflict of interest. However, Hyun Jong supposedly persuaded them since he believed that no other actors would be realistic enough to play the two roles. ?
?There will be attention regarding the casting of two lead actors from the same agency,? he admitted. ?But I want to confront that while making a good drama.?
Lee Min Ho?s Legend of the Blue Sea
