Game director Yu Suzuki asked for a humble $2-million in his Kickstarter campaign to reboot the 1999 Sega RPG hit, Shenmue, during the recently-concluded Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2015 in LA. Less than 24-hours after the announcement was made, Suzuki?s campaign reached its target.
So now the game engineer is hinting of a bigger and better Shenmue III if his Kickstarter campaign reaches new heights — $5-10 million to be exact.
For one, a $5-million goal would mean that the Japanese producer would be able to include one exciting feature into the game that he has been toying with for a long time already. There were no specifics as to what the feature is. And if the Kickstarter goal reaches $10-million, then it would allow the game to be a truly ?open world?, giving it a vastly different dynamics.
According to Suzuki, it is his goal not only to re-launch Shenmue, but to create a game with the full participation of gamers around the world.
?If Shenmue 3 was going to get made, I wanted to make it with the fans. Through Kickstarter, I knew that could happen. Together, with Shenmue fans everywhere, I knew we could build the game that the series deserves. I know that the goal of making Shenmue 3 with the fans, and seeing Shenmue in the hands of gamers all around the world is a lofty one. We are balancing our ambitions for a grand sequel with the pragmatic realities of developing a game of this scale. It will not be easy, but I have dreamed of making this sequel for 14 years ? it is time to bring Shenmue back! And to make it come true, it will need the love and support from each and every one of you!? Suzuki said.
Shenmue is an RPG starring Ryo, who travelled in China to search for his father?s killers. He meets an unlikely companion, Shenhua, and they travel further into the depths of enemy territory where both danger and excitement awaits.
Sounds exciting? Thousands of people seem to think so as the campaign has now breached the $3.5 million mark. And with 26 more days to go before the end of the campaign, the prospects of Shenmue is looking very good.
So if you think you?re just helping Shenmue?s comeback via Kickstarter, you are in for some really generous bonus. Depending on your pledge, supporters get some really exciting ROI?s.
Those who will pledge $29 to $99 will get the digital or physical copies of the game for PC or PS4 depending on the amount of the pledge. Those who donate $100 or more gets to play the trial version a few months in advance of the final release. A $120 or more donation will get you a Toy Capsule of the characters, but the really outrageous ?prizes? include a replica of Ryo?s jacket, the ?original? jacket as worn by Masaya Matsuzake, the Japanese actor who played Ryo in Shenmue 1 and 2, and an exclusive dinner with Suzuki and Team for $3,000-$10,000 in pledge.
