The fight gods have given us a good main event on this one, folks. UFC Fight Night Ottawa will have Rory ?Red King? MacDonald is taking on kickboxing ace Stephen ?Wonderboy? Thompson in the headliner bout. In the co-headliner bout, Donald ?Cowboy? Cerrone will be face a very dangerous Patrick ?The Predator Cote?.
MMA matches are pretty much hard to predict as one exchange can change the complexion of the whole fight as we have seen in many occasions such as the first Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen fight. Also, big surprises come up once in awhile like how Ovince St. Preux starched Shogun Rua in the first round of the contest and also how ?Cardio? Cain Velasquez faded against his championship bout with Fabricio Werdum in Mexico City. MMA is such an unpredictable sport and that what makes it good. But some of us, fans and media alike are bold enough to make predictions. Well, here is our bold Fight Night Ottawa predictions.
Rory MacDonald vs. Stephen Thompson
Stephen Thompson looked amazing in his last six fights after his first MMA lost to Matt Brown. His wins included a KO against Jake Ellenberger with a spinning hook kick and a dominant TKO finish against former UFC Welterweight Champion Johny Hendricks. He looks unstoppable as of the moment and maybe number 1 ranked welterweight Rory MacDonald has the answer to the unique questions that Thompson brings to the Octagon.
Dan Downes, in his UFC article, pointed out that Thompson had some flaws in the boxing area of his striking game as shown in his bouts against Patrick Cote and Matt Brown. Downes makes a point that Rory MacDonald can be a patient fighter and won?t rush Thompson like the others. This would make the bout interesting and Downes has MacDonald winning by decision.
But the question is, does MacDonald have the savvy to outwit the distance-controlling and manipulation game by Thompson? Also, does Thompson have enough skills to thwart Rory?s takedown? How is his guard against someone who has been training forever with Georges St. Pierre in Tristar in Canada?
With Thompson training with Weidman and a brother-in-law of Carlos Machado, a BJJ legend, it is likely that Thompson could control the distance and thwart takedowns, submission attempts and the ground and pound game of MacDonald. He may never hit the ground. With this, we think Thompson might take it via TKO within three rounds. This though, is not a good fight to put your money on.
Donald Cerrone vs. Patrick Cote
Cowboy looked pretty awesome leading up to his title bout against Rafael Dos Anjos. But coming up in weight against a bigger man, it would be hard for Cerrone to take the win. It is arguable that he has the speed advantage but bigger strikes can come from The Predator and end the fight early or take the W via decision. As pointed out by Downes, Cote has the tendency to move forward aggressively. This, Downes thinks, would cause his downfall against Cerrone. Downes predicts that Cerrone will get a third round win via submission. Our prediction? We think Cote will take it via a KO and TKO finish. Cerrone did not deal well with the crowding and marauding aggressiveness of RDA, this could be his fall against the bigger man in Patrick Cote. Like the headliner, we would not put money on this pick and would just like to enjoy the fight.
