Legendary game developer Nintendo, which had shunned e-sports in the past, is now showing signs that it has indeed made a 180-degree turn. Apart from last month?s Wii U tournament, Nintendo has just announced that it is hosting an upcoming Super Smash Bros Tournament for their 3DS consoles during the San Diego Comic Con (SDCC).
This Super Smash Bros 3DS tournament will happen two weeks from now on July 25 at the Nintendo Gaming Lounge of the Marriott Marquis & Marina. The San Diego Convention Center can be found directly adjacent to the said hotel.
Qualifying rounds for the Super Smash Bros competition will commence by engaging players on four-on-four matches. Winners who will emerge from those will advance to the next match brackets. Ultimately, the championship round will be fought as one-on-one battles. For those who won?t be able to make it to the tournament, Nintendo will offer a livestream of the event via their Twitch channel.
Here is the official press release published by Nintendo:
“Nintendo will be hosting its first-ever tournament for the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS game at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25. Fans are invited to come to the Nintendo Gaming Lounge at the Marriott Marquis & Marina located at 333 W. Harbor Drive (adjacent to the San Diego Convention Center) for a chance to participate.
Starting at noon, there will be a preliminary round in which groups of four competitors battle it out, with the winner advancing. During the finals, players will duke it out one-on-one to determine the top smasher. Tournament slots are limited, and fans will be able to sign up the day of the event on a first-come, first-served basis.
For fans not able to attend San Diego Comic-Con, tournament action will be streamed live on Nintendo?s Twitch channel at http://www.twitch.tv/Nintendo. Additional Nintendo Gaming Lounge activities will be announced in the future.”
Nintendo hosted a similar affair last month during E3 2014 for the Super Smash Bros Wii U Tournament held at the Nokia Center. Both SDCC and E3 events are widely seen as publicity stunts to promote the upcoming official release of Super Smash Bros for the 3DS on October 3 and for the Wii U sometime during this year?s holiday season.
