We’ve known texting when done alongside other things, like driving, can be fatal. We must now add texting in the movie house as one of the most dangerous things to do.

That’s exactly what happened in Florida after a retired police officer pulled out a gun and shot a man who was texting his daughter’s baby sitter.

The shooting occurred at a movie ?house in Wesley Chapel on Monday. Chad Oulson and his wife were watching Lone Survivor and was texting during the movie previews. Seated behind them were former police officer Curtis Reeves and his wife. Reeves got up to report to the theater manager and when he got back to his seat, an argument between the two men ensued.

Chad-Oulson_facebook-300x199Reports say that someone threw a bucket of popcorn and, fearing that he was being attacked, Reeves pulled a gun and shot Oulson, injuring his wife as well. An off-duty officer happened to be at the theater and subdued the former officer until arresting officers came.

The victims were taken to the hospital where Oulson was pronounced dead. His wife suffered hand injuries.

Curtis Reeves was charged with second-degree murder and is held without bail.

Don’t you think it’s ironic how good guys end up hurting other people over trivial matters?

Curtis-Reeves_suspect_murder_FBFor people who know Reeves, the news of the fatal shooting was shocking mainly because they regard him as the good guy. Aside from being a retired police officer, he also served in the U.S. Navy as a machinist. He frequently received commendations for his leadership skills.

After retirement, he played a major role in the creation of Tampa Police Department’s first tactical response team. His resume makes him look like the guy you’d rely on for help, not the one who snaps over a harmless thing and ends up killing a man.

According to a report by Yahoo News, early in his career, a supervisor once said in an evaluation that he has a tendency to be impatient with legal matters and he was abrupt with some complainants. He also got reprimanded for being careless in handling a city weapon.

Despite all his hard work and exemplary performance throughout his career, Curtis Reeves may be mostly remembered as the guy who shot a man who was just trying to check on his daughter.

It’s sad but this is a reminder that everything we did in the past, no matter how great, can be erased that easily by one reckless move.
