‘Steven Universe Season 3’ News from SDCC: Rebecca Sugar Talks About LGBT Theme

By on

The recent San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) event shed some light on the popular anime series “Steven Universe Season 3”?and just like in the past, the series? LGBT themes were once again in the spotlight. If you can remember, previous spoilers about ?Steven Universe Season 3? revealed how Ruby and Sapphire fused to become Garnet.

Now, while the Crystal Gems are known to be genderless, the fact that they are voiced by females make viewers assume that they?re both girls. During the panel at the SDCC event, Sugar explained why it was important to include the LGBT theme in the series by saying ?In large part it?s based on my experience as a bisexual woman. It?s very important to me that we speak to kids about consent. That we speak to kids about identity. There?s so much more I have to say about this. I want to feel like I exist, and I want everyone else who wants to feel that way to feel that way too.?

In the episode entitled ?The Answer,? Sugar made it clear that the real world occurrence of LGBT issues are met with different reactions and in the”Steven Universe Season 3″?episode, the fusion was met with outrage. The other Gems did not appreciate the fusion.

Sugar also added ?When I got to flesh the story out in the book, I got to describe a little more the way that the two of them came to understand each other better and what was happening, not just to them, just to one looking at the other, but also their whole point of view changing by sharing this experience with someone. Not just their point of view on the other person, but also of themselves and of the world that they?re in ? everything, everything changes.?
