StarCraft 2 has been around pretty long now to have spawned a lot of expansions. In typical Blizzard fashion, expansions continue to roll out. The latest of these expansions is Legacy of the Void, which, so far, no one has been able to explain properly, in terms of the synopsis and what it?s really all about.
StarCraft 2 came out in June 2008, announced exclusively during the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational. Then-Executive Vice President Rob Pardo had said that this science fiction, real-time strategy game would have Wings of Liberty as its main storyline, and will be further expanded with the storylines of Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void.
The old StarCraft featured the same expansion scheme, which explored the storylines of the three races, namely the Zerg, the Terran, and the Protoss. Each expansion provided the extended storylines for the three races in the campaign. Yet again, Blizzard is taking the same approach with StarCraft 2, which is a story that tells the on-going quest of the races to cope with the events that took place during the first StarCraft game.
In Wings of Liberty, we once again explore the story of the Terran hero Jim Raynor as he struggles against the clutches of the Terran Dominion. The leader of the Dominion, Arcturus Mengsk, has placed a price on Jim Raynor?s head, and by attachment, on all the enemies of the Terran Dominion, colonies included.
Heart of the Swarm, the follow-up to the main storyline, further explored the hybrid Zerg queen Sarah Kerrigan as she grappled with her new-found powers bestowed upon her by Zerg corruption. The Queen of Blades was treated much like a WarCraft hero in this expansion, as, like the heroes in WarCraft, she can be upgraded and leveled-up a la RPGs.
If you?ve played the first StarCraft game, then you know what?s about to come next. The final expansion, Legacy of the Void, tells about the story of the Protoss. The last we?ve seen them, they were trying to overcome the onslaught of the oncoming Zerg wave dropping on their home world. This time, rumors say that the hero of the Protoss will be the Dark Templar Zeratul.
Aside from that speculation, no one else knows what the new game will have. The story, though, has been already written, and a lot of cinematic and voice work had been done already. However, the missions and the campaign mechanics are in need of more spicing up, game director Dustin Browder said, before they can be shown to the public.
This isn?t new, though. Blizzard has been known to release games when they are sure that they have the right stuff in it. Legacy of the Void is coming along, Browder says, but as for the release date, it remains to be seen when they are going to finally unleash Legacy of the Void to the public. So far, Blizzard themselves hasn?t given a release date, nor a year for that matter.
However, there are a lot of other games that can occupy a gamer?s attention while waiting for the latest StarCraft expansion. Hearthstone and Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls had just come out, while Heroes is approaching beta, and another World of WarCraft expansion is coming out.
