More plot details and the cast of the movie has finally been revealed at the D23 Expo.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was recently announced during the Star Wars Celebration last April. Originally titled as Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, it takes place before the events of A New Hope, it will focus on the resistance fighters that banded together to steal the plans of the Death Star.

It has been revealed that the Principal Photography for the film has begun, Rouge One will be helmed by Gareth Edwards (director of 2014?s Godzilla and Monsters). Also the cast for the film has been revealed, but no details on what roles they will be portraying.

- Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline)
- Donnie Yen (Blade II)
- Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly)
- Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland)
- Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale)
- Alan Tudyk (I, Robot)
- Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler)
The movie will be a separate from the core saga movies as explained by producer Kathleen Kennedy and it will still retain the elements that is similar to the Star Wars universe.
Kathleen has stated “It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know, Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for Rogue One.”
It has also been announced that Greig Fraser (Zero Dark Thirty) will be the director of photography while Neil Corbould (Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, and Saving Private Ryan) will be the special effects supervisor. Dave Crossman (Harry Potter) will be the costume designer for the movie as well.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will hit the theaters on December 16, 2016.
