Sony Xperia SP owners will not be delighted about an announcement from Sony Mobile representative. Apparently, the 2013 mid-range smartphone is not getting Android 4.4 KitKat update according to the team which may affect Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V as well.
Xperia SP End of Life Cycle
A dedicated section from FrAndroid forums called ?Sony answers your questions? revealed a stunning truth regarding Sony Xperia SP?s Android 4.4 KitKat update. Sony Mobile team received a question in February 18th 2014 several days after the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean began rolling out.
One thread asked when Sony Xperia SP will receive an Android 4.4 KitKat update and in early March, the team confirmed promising early details about another major firmware update. But now, Sony Mobile team said that the smartphone is not anymore receiving Android KitKat.
It seems like the team wanted an early end of life cycle for Xperia SP that happens to be spending its first-year anniversary ? release date back in April 2013. So far, Sony official support page for the smartphone has not been updated yet and remains ?under investigation? for Android 4.4 KitKat.
With the early judgment given to the device, there is only a slim chance of getting any reconsideration from Sony Mobile and likely 99 per cent locked with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.
Impact to Other Xperia
It is not only Sony Xperia SP which has been tagged as ?under investigation? by Sony Mobile. Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V are also under the same status on Android 4.4 KitKat update. Sony Mobile?s upgrade plans for Q1 2014 excluded all four mid-range smartphones and only listed the latest models in the market.
|Xperia SP||Android 4.3 Jelly Bean||April 2013||October 2014|
|Xperia T||Android 4.3 Jelly Bean||September 2012||March 2014|
|Xperia TX||Android 4.3 Jelly Bean||October 2012||April 2014|
|Xperia V||Android 4.3 Jelly Bean||December 2012||June 2014|
Based on the official release dates for these smartphones, Xperia SP and Xperia V are more eligible to receive Android 4.4 KitKat update before Google releases Android 4.4.3 or Android 4.5/5.0 versions.
As far as strict ruling, all devices with good sales record and within 18-month update window period remain eligible for any major update from their respective manufacturers.
