I am Setsuna is one of this month?s interesting releases. Despite being published by Square Enix and appearing at E3, the nostalgia-influenced RPG will only be available through the PlayStation Network for PS4 users and Steam for PC gamers. For those excited or curious about this digital release, here?s everything you need to know about the game.
Players control of a character named Endir, an assassin who was supposed to kill Setsuna at the start of the game. However, it is revealed that Setsuna must perform a ritual for her village, and she tells Endir that he can kill her after the ceremony. He agrees and the two go off on an ice- and snow-filled journey, where they will meet new characters and kill enemies together.
Since I am Setsuna is based on older RPGs, it should come as no surprise that one of its influences is the critically acclaimed Chrono Trigger. This RPG is still heralded by many as one of the genre?s best games, so taking influence from it is a risky deal, but something developer Tokyo RPG Factory can handle.
While it is doubtful that time travel will become a factor, the RPG does have the exact same battle system as Chrono Trigger, so those who hate turn-based RPGs might want to steer clear of this title. There are also other RPG tropes that fans who grew up in the 1990s will appreciate, like going through dungeons to get loot and level up party members. Players can also go through several towns and buy items or sell some of their unneeded things.
Crafting and Loot Drops
It wouldn?t be a 2016 game without either of these two, but they are more significant in this game. During a gameplay session, Kotaku discovered that killing enemies differently will make them drop different types of loot or crafting items.
Barely killing it will have an enemy drop one item, while overkilling a foe might make it drop more items. Exploiting an enemy’s weakness or using a magic spell could also net players different goodies, so players will have to experiment a lot with this game. Some of the goodies can be used for crafting rare weapons and other items, so players will have to grind a lot.
I am Setsuna is slated for a July 19 release on PSN and Steam. Fans who pre-order the game can get an exclusive theme on PS4 or a new music track on PC.
