Scarlet Heart: Ryeo debuted recently amid high expectations from k-drama fans. However, the replacement for Doctors only gathered mediocre ratings versus KBS1?s Moonlight Drawn By Clouds.
The new series is a historical fantasy drama based on the Chinese novel “Bu Bu Jing Xin” by Tong Hua. It stars Hallyu actress Lee Ji Eun as Hae Soo. She travels back in time to the Goryeo era whenever an eclipse takes place. This is where she falls in love with Wang So, played by Korean actor Lee Joon Gi.
More expensive than Descendants of the Sun
Many fans got intrigued over news that Scarlet Heart: Ryeo has beaten Descendants of the Sun as the highest priced K-drama ever sold. This is supposedly because of its huge cast and extravagant production.
According to Drama Fever, the new series is reportedly selling to Youku for $400,000 per episode. This makes the entire 20-episode series worth 8 million dollars to air.
The amount is three times that of k-drama Cheese in the Trap. The said series broke records when it debuted earlier this year at $125,000 per episode.
Scarlet Heart: Ryeo ratings
However, the highly anticipated show?s large and good-looking cast reportedly failed to bring in a big audience. According to Soompi, it debuted to only 7.4 percent ratings for its first episode. It recorded 9.3 percent ratings for its second episode airing right after.
The said viewership share is far from the finale ratings of its predecessor, Doctors Korean drama. The Park Shin Hye?Kim Rae Won starrer gathered over 20 percent audience share when its finale aired last week. It became so successful that fans are clamoring for a second season.
Moonlight Drawn By Clouds grabs the lead
Scarlet Heart: Ryeo was beaten by another new series, Moonlight Drawn By Clouds. It premiered earlier this month with only 8.3 and 8.5 percent for its first two episodes, respectively. However, Moonlight Drawn By Clouds ratings doubled to 16 percent for its third episode this week.
K-drama fans would wonder how these new shows will fare compared to the previous season?s hit series. These include MBC?s W Korean drama, which topped last season?s Nielsen CPI ratings list with 273.3 points. Doctors ranked as a close runner-up with 266.4 points, followed by KBS?s Uncontrollably Fond with 242.4 points.
