Since the termination of the World Cyber Games (WCG) earlier this year, we have seen very few cross-platform tournaments emerge. But all that may soon change as World eSports Championship Games (WECG) hopes to continue the tradition that WCG started many years ago.
The WECG has just revealed its game lineup for its event that will be happening this December in China. The official game selections for this year should come to no surprise to everyone?Starcraft 2, Hearthstone, Dota 2, and Ultra Street Fighter 4 were chosen for the PC platform, while Crisis Action and Dance Everyday were selected as official mobile games. In addition, Valve?s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive was also chosen as a promotional game title.
Blizzard?s titles (SC2 and Hearthstone) and Valve?s CS:GO have been considered as ?standards? in previous WCG tournaments while Dota 2 is in its peak in China right now, so no big surprise there. Meanwhile, Crisis Action and Dance Everyday seem to be among the most popular mobile games in China.
Perhaps the biggest game missing in this list is the widely popular MOBA League of Legends. The game seems to be falling behind in China where its main competitor Dota 2 has a firm hold. This is probably because of the recent conclusion of The International 4 where we saw two Chinese teams battle it out on the grand finals?teams Vici Gaming and Newbee. Team Newbee took home the first prize of more than $5 million. In total, 5 teams from China made it to the top 8 of the said event bagging around $8.5 million in total.
Another game missing in the list is Crossfire. The FPS game is popular in China and has been part of the WCG game roster for the past several years. And with the addition of CS:GO, it has become unclear if another FPS game will make it to the lineup this year.
In the following months, we may see more games appear on the list, including the two mentioned above. But just with the revealed lineup, we could already expect some exciting action from these popular games.
Though previously announced that the prize pool amounts to $3.2 million, WECG has yet to specify the prize money allocated for each of the games. Stay tuned for more updates on the WECG.
