With 2017 lurking in the corner, smartphone enthusiasts have their eyes set on the flagship offering of Android phone makers. Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6 are two of the most hotly anticipated smartphones that will determine the fate of South Korean multinationals.
Samsung looks to make a comeback after the Galaxy Note 7 debacle while LG seeks to move forward in the smartphone market after LG G5 failed to yield impressive sales.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 will once again use two different chipsets. The Galaxy S8 will be powered by Qualcomm?s next-gen Snapdragon 835 SoC and there will be a variant featuring Samsung?s own Exynos 8895. A whopping 6GB RAM is indicated to be coupled with the chipset. There are also rumors of a crazy ?Beast Mode? that will give more firepower to the device.
The LG G6 is also said to be powered with the Snapdragon 835 processor paired with a 4GB RAM. Some sources, however, suggest that an older SD 830 chipset will power the device. The G6 overall will be bit less powerful than the Samsung flagship.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 will feature a bezel-less slim design. The device is said to ditch the physical Home button and capacitive keys for 3D Touch like software keys. The keys are also said to be customizable offering a variety of functions.
The LG G6, for its part, will ditch its modular design according to the latest NDTV Gadgets?report. The leaked renders portray a plain design with a glossy finish. The device is said to have a metallic body with a glass finish that will support wireless charging.
The Samsung flagship is rumored to ditch its physical Home Screen button that also acted as a fingerprint sensor. The fingerprint sensor instead will be embedded beneath the display on the Galaxy S8. The device is reportedly packing Synaptics? next gen biometrics technology.
The LG G6, on the other hand, is offering quite an advanced features in terms of the device?s security. Back in October, LG unveiled an all-in-one iris scanning module. The module doubles as both an iris scanner and a front-facing camera. It uses a filter changing mechanism to switch between the two functions.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6 will both use OLED display panels. The Galaxy S8 will come in two display variants, a 5.5-inch and 6.0-inch Plus model. Both the S8 models will feature Edge to Edge displays with SUPER AMOLED technology. Rumors suggest that the smaller variant will have a 2K resolution while the larger one may feature a 4K/UHD screen resolution.
The LG G6 will feature a 5.3-inch QHD (1440×2560 pixels) display similar to the older G5. Some rumors suggest that LG could push for the increase in display size while also offering a 4K screen resolution.
Both Galaxy S8 and LG G6 are expected to be waterproof. The S8 is tipped as a highly water-resistant smartphone with an IP68 certification. The LG G6, on other hand, is said to have mild water resistance features, should the company feature the same modular design.
Though overall the Samsung Galaxy S8 trumps the LG G6 in terms of features, LG could offer innovative features to stand out from the rest. Its attempts with the LG G5 in 2016 were indeed commendable. The LG G6 will reportedly be released earlier than the Samsung flagship. It is likely that the company would cash in on the delayed S8 to offer similar features and win customers.
