Android 4.4 KitKat is probably the last major update Samsung Galaxy S3 will ever get and set for release by March or April. However, there are several important things you need to know regarding the upcoming major firmware.
Final Major Update
Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300 has already reached its expiration date back in November 2013 while Galaxy S3 I9305 will reach the end of life cycle in March 2014. It obvious that none of these variants will receive Android 4.5 or 5.0 Lollipop or any further firmware updates other than Android 4.4 KitKat.
Confirmed Firmware Upgrade
Samsung U.S. confirmed upcoming Android KitKat updates and Galaxy S3 is lucky to be included. Sprint official blog page announced official Android KitKat software update for S3 along with Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S4 Mini and Galaxy Mega.
Other major network carriers in the United States such as AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile will also release an update.
Once your Galaxy S3 received an update, it will get several changes provided by Samsung and Google?s Android KitKat firmware.
- Location menu to allow users to easily activate GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile networks using an integrated shortcut. It will also display battery usage of apps running location services.
- Improvements on the messaging that enables option to choose between Google Hangouts or Samsung default messaging app. Also, emoji icons are updated with more assortments to choose from.
- Google Mobile Service updates for automatic backup of photos and videos with modification option via Google Docs.
- Updates on the lock screen feature include quick access to the camera with new album art while the music is playing.
Not All Variants Eligible
Unfortunately, not all Galaxy S3 models released back then are going to be updated with Android 4.4 KitKat. Galaxy S3 LTE model and units in the United States are expected to receive Android KitKat but not the unit powered by 1 GB of RAM which is the Galaxy S3 I9300 aka Exynos model.
It seems like that the 1 GB of RAM won?t be able to run the latest Galaxy S services and TouchWiz UI on the Android KitKat firmware smoothly, forcing Samsung to choose for the 2 GB models only.
Adaptation from Galaxy S5
Unlike with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, Galaxy S3 is unlikely to get new features ported from Galaxy S5. If there is anything expected to be ported, it is probably from Galaxy S4 or Galaxy Note 3 as the hardware of S3 already aged.
Expected Release Date
Galaxy S3 users may expect Android 4.4.2 KitKat arriving around March or April 2014 depending on network carriers and territory. Galaxy S3 I9300 or other variants with 1 GB RAM from the yesteryear flagship smartphone are not receiving any Android KitKat update which also coincides with update support expiry. Samsung has not announced yet any official release dates regarding the next major update.
