Ronda Rousey is set to fight Miesha Tate after the latter overthrew the bantamweight champion, Holly Holm, during last Saturday?s UFC 196, making the champ?s reign disappointingly short-lived.
After one of the biggest upsets in UFC history happened back in the UFC 193 wherein Holm, ?The Preacher?s Daughter,? knocked out and dealt superstar Rousey her first defeat, another series of turnarounds happened in the main events of the UFC 196.
Champions Holm and Conor McGregor lost via submission to their respective opponents, Tate and Nate Diaz, who both finished the fight with a rear naked choke.
Tate defeating Holm now leads to a rematch with Rousey, TheGuardian reports. UFC president, Dana White, confirmed this rematch saying, ?I think that Ronda now will fight Miesha Tate for the title. That?s what?s going to happen. That?s what I said before this fight even happened. Whoever wins tonight will fight Ronda for the title.?
The MMA superstar did not watch the fight but when White texted her that ?Miesha just choked her unconscious,? she immediately replied, ?Looks like I gotta get back to work.?
Meanwhile, HollywoodLife reports that Rousey was actually looking forward to a rematch with Holm following her devastating loss, because according to a source, she wants ?revenge? and she wants it badly.
?Hearing that Holly Holm lost was a blow to Ronda?s ego and pocket book,? the source said. ?Ronda wanted to be the one to provide Holly with her first loss and get revenge at the same time. Now Ronda has to hear from all the haters that she lost to someone who can?t even successfully defend their championship in their first fight as champion.?
The source continued, ?The only thing making Ronda happy is that she has dominated Miesha Tate in the past and anticipates to do the same in the future.? The source further added, ?Ronda feels she is the number one contender, and anticipates fighting Miesha and winning again, but she is disappointed that she will never have the huge payday with Holly anymore; the fight doesn?t have that same aura and cache.?
Tate has proven to Rousey that she is the smarter fighter against Holm, who dominates the standing game but easily folds on the ground. Tate almost ended the match on the second round but ?The Preacher?s Daughter? showed the strength of a champion when she managed to survive that extremely difficult bout.
But in the fifth round, while Holm was dominating the striking game, Tate was able to secure a takedown in the last two minutes and exhausted all her energy in that rear naked choke until Holm was left unconscious and the referee had to stop the fight.
While the newest UFC women?s bantamweight champion managed to overthrow the fighter who gave Rousey her first taste of defeat, it?s still uncertain if she will be able to defend her title against the fighter to whom she submitted twice in the past. Because Rousey has more than enough motivation to come back as champion given her confidence in defeating Tate again and by doing so, possibly getting that chance to get her revenge against Holm.
