The penultimate episode of Riverdale finally answered the central question of the season “Who killed Jason Blossom?” After months of red herrings that made us believe it was Hal Cooper (Lochlyn Munro) or FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich), Riverdale Episode 12 revealed it was none other than Clifford Blossom (Barclay Hope), Jason’s very own father, who shot him on July 11th.
As seen from the last episode, Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Alice (Mädchen Amick) learned from Hal the family secret that he has long been hiding: the Coopers are, in fact, Blossoms by blood and Polly (Tiera Skovbye) and Jason’s (Trevor Stines) relationship was technically incest. FP is still behind bars after confessing to a crime he did not commit when everyone turned to Joaquin (Rob Raco) who apparently was the only person he called following his arrest. Alice and the gang confronted him and we learned that he and Jughead’s (Cole Sprouse) dad were indeed involved in Jason’s murder.
Joaquin then gives the series’ Core Four directions to FP’s contingent plan which turns out to be a flash drive hidden in Jason’s varsity jacket. The flash drive holds security footage from the place where Jason was kept that fateful day and it shows Cliff pulling the trigger at his own son with nary a hint of remorse.
Mystery solved? Well, not completely.
We may know now the person responsible for Jason’s death but the reason behind it is still up for debate. Why did Clifford kill him? Here are the most likely theories that explain why Jason had to go.
1. Jason refused to enter the family drug dealing business.
Jason rejected the family drug-slash-maple syrup business, breaking his father’s heart and ultimately provoking Clifford to get rid of the family’s only son. Perhaps, Jason only found out about what the family business really is and confronted his father about it before running off. Assuming Jason would reveal his illegal secrets could be a strong reason for Clifford to kill.
2. Jason threatened to go public with the Blossom family incest.
Clifford and Penelope Blossom (Nathalie Boltt) may not have cared about their son’s incestuous relationship with a cousin but Jason may actually have. It’s possible that the lovers didn’t know they were related when they started seeing each other and the Blossom son only found out the dirty secret before he was supposed to elope with his girlfriend. Perhaps he threatened to go public with it unless his dad gave them a boatload of cash?
Or, maybe…just maybe Jason really was patient zero in the zombie apocalypse. It’s the least plausible idea, but showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa did share previously that Riverdale is open to exploring the supernatural in Season 2, so who knows? Too bad, we won’t know the real motive from the culprit himself.
Riverdale Season 1 Finale
In the closing part of Riverdale Episode 12, when authorities came to arrest Clifford, we saw him dead from a noose in the Blossom’s barn surrounded by barrels of drugs. Now, another question arises: Did he really kill himself? EP Aguirre-Sacasa says we’re going to have to wait until next Thursday’s finale to get a clearer idea of what happened.
“Episode is the who-dunnit, and episode is the ‘Why did he do it?’ A lot more mysteries start rolling out from there” he said. “I would say two things: stay tuned for the finale and remember, we didn’t see Clifford hang himself. We just saw Clifford hanging there.”
Don’t miss Riverdale‘s first season finale this Thursday, May 11 at 9/8c on The CW.
