Rio Olympics 2016 Celebrities: Who?s Going? Who Cancelled?

By on

Despite a lot of issues surrounding the Rio Olympic 2016, there will still be celebrities who wouldn?t want to miss the different sporting events live.

However, most celebrities kept quiet about their plans on whether they will attend the games or not and most will just be watching from their TV screens at home, Bustle reports. Matthew McConaughey told the Today Show that he and his Brazilian wife, Camila Alves, will most likely be watching the Olympics at home. While a royal spokesperson said that the royal couple Prince William and Kate Middleton will not be attending as well.

Aside from celebrities, there are also star athletes who cancelled their participation in the Olympic games such as Lebron James, Stephen Curry, Roger Federer, Lionel Messi, Jason Day, and Simona Halep. Their reasons are mostly because of their concerns about the Zika outbreak, injury, or recovery from a full tournament season.

Even though stars won?t dazzle as much in Rio de Janeiro compared to the London Olympics in 2012, big Brazilian stars will be definitely be present. Brazilian Victoria?s Secret model Adriana Lima is very honoured to have the Olympics staged in her country. ?Brazilians are very passionate about sports, sports run in our blood!? Lima said. She also added that this event is very important as ?the whole world will have a chance to experience our culture up close.?

Lima joins fellow Brazilian models Alessandra Ambrosio and Gisele Bundchen, who is said to be ?the living embodiment? of ?The Girl from Ipanema.? They will be strutting into the Macarena Stadium at the opening ceremonies and covering the event for NBC along with Ryan Seacrest.

At the moment, it appears that many celebrities have cancelled their tip to Rio and just opted to watch the events at home. Back in the 2012 London Olympics, big names such as Sir Paul McCartney, J.K. Rowling, David Beckham and Daniel Craig were present in the event.

We have yet to find out if more celebrities will be showing up at the ceremonies or the events at the Rio 2016 Olympics. Stay tuned for more news and updates here on TheBitbag!
