PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, otherwise known as PUBG, is now joining the world of mobile games. The popular multiplayer online battle royale game’s mobile version, simply known as PUBG Mobile, has already been available in Asia and Canada. However, this time around, it is now more widely available in several other regions around the world, including the United States.
PUBG Mobile Now Available on iOS and Android
Fans of PUBG who lean towards the mobile side of gaming will be pleased to know that PUBG Mobile is finally available for iOS and Android devices in the US. Like many mobile games, PUBG’s smartphone iteration is free-to-play with optional micro-transactions. According to reports, recommended specs for Android users include at least 2GB RAM and Android 5.1.1. On the other hand, Apple users will require iOS 9.0 or later and an iPhone 5s or later to enjoy the game.
Reportedly, the more widespread availability of PUBG for mobile devices is in retaliation to the recent launch of Fortnite: Battle Royale for mobile Apple devices. As to how PUBG’s mobile release will fair against Fortnite’s mobile iteration is still unknown. However, it’s worth noting that PUBG has a bit of an upper hand against its competitor thanks to the mobile game’s launch on Android devices as well.
On promoting PUBG Mobile’s launch, Tencent vice president Chen Jerry shared, “We are working hard to create an authentic PUBG mobile experience that players new and old will love. A lot went into controls and optimization to give players a smooth and intuitive experience.”
What is PUBG?
For the uninitiated, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds — PUBG for short — is a multiplayer online battle royale game. Developed and published by PUBG Corporation, the game allows several players to parachute onto an island all at once. There, they can scavenge for weapons and equipment that can be used to either defend themselves or take down other players. Interestingly, the safe zone of an arena’s map decreases over time. This backs players into a corner, forcing them to into tighter sections and prompting imperative encounters against opponents. As it follows the battle royale formula, the last surviving player or team takes the victory in each match.
PUBG first launched for the Microsoft Windows and Xbox One in December 2017. Since then, the game has received positive reviews from fans and critics alike. Furthermore, PUBG received several nominations for Game of the Year in 2017, among other notable accolades.
