Playing video games is not entirely an isolated experience as players can communicate with others via text or voice chat while blasting at enemies in games like Call of Duty Black Ops 3 and Destiny. The PlayStation 4?offers this kind of functionality in order to help make players feel as if they were playing beside their playmates. But it isn?t just the players? experience that is being linked as speculations arose recently that the ISIS used the PS4 to coordinate among themselves in the recent Paris terror attacks. How true are the claims?
The rumors spread like wildfire after a mistaken report by Forbes said that a PS4 was retrieved during a raid. ?Evidence reportedly turned up included at least one PlayStation 4 console,? Forbes wrote. ?Belgian federal home affairs minister Jan Jambon said outright that the PS4 is used by ISIS agents to communicate, and was selected due to the fact that it?s notoriously hard to monitor.?
However, the story has now been corrected to state that the gaming console was?recovered was from a previous ISIS raid in Belgian. ?This was actually a mistake that I?ve had to edit and correct,? Forbes writer Paul Tassi told Kotaku. ?I?ve edited the post to reflect that, and it was more meant to be about discussing why or how groups like ISIS can use consoles.?
Despite the writer?s error, it remains to be proven wrong that a Sony’s console?might have being used by the ISIS in coordinating their attacks in Paris. ?PlayStation 4 is even more difficult to keep track of than WhatsApp,? Jambon said.
According to Gamerant, there are a lot of applications being monitored by national security agencies, however, the PS4 is ?much harder to monitor and relies on consumer participation.? Here is Sony?s statement on the allegations:
?PlayStation 4 allows for communication amongst friends and fellow gamers and, in common with all modern connected devices, this has the potential to be abused. However, we take our responsibilities to protect our users extremely seriously and we urge our users and partners to report activities that may be offensive, suspicious or illegal. When we identify or are notified of such conduct, we are committed to taking appropriate actions in conjunction with the appropriate authorities and will continue to do so.?
