For the first time since 2010, Sony did the unthinkable by announcing a price hike to the subscription of PS Plus on its official blog. The price hike is a little big and might be too expensive for some. As the price of Sony?s online service is now up to par with the price of the Xbox Live Gold subscription. Is the new PS Plus Subscription price justifiable?
Starting on September 22, the PS Plus Subscription price for US and Canada will increase. The new prices are $59.99 USD/ $69.99 CAD for twelve months and $24.99 USD/$29.99 CAD for three months. However, no price changes were made to monthly subscriptions. According to Sony, the price increase is done so that the subscription reflects the market condition.
?The new pricing reflects the current market conditions while enabling us to continue providing exceptional value to our members. As a member, you will continue to enjoy the benefits and features that enable shared experiences, such as online multiplayer, free games, and exclusive discounts, said Sony.
Since the PS Plus Subscription price is now up to par with that of Xbox Live Gold, it?s possible that the free game offering of Sony might improve as well. In hindsight, Microsoft offers AAA titles; albeit old, as compared to Sony?s common use of indie titles as offering. However, the price increase was done to cope with the market conditions and not to improve the service so an upgrade to the offerings may not be possible as well.
The price increase will not be effective until Sept. 22, so it?s still possible to get cheaper subscriptions. Those whose subscriptions are about to expire should renew quickly to get the original price which is at least $10 cheaper. It?s also better to just buy a few PS Plus subscriptions cards before the date to save up to $10.
