Microsoft has just revealed the latest lineup for their Xbox Games with Gold service, and it?s a pretty solid list of titles. Xbox One owners get indie title Earthlock: Festival of Magic, along with the 2.5D game Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, and two backwards-compatible 360 titles in Mirror’s Edge and Forza Horizon. PS4 fans are now wondering if Sony will be able to compete with their rival with their PS Plus free games for September 2016.
Sony might stand a chance if they include Killzone Shadowfall and Knack as free games, since fans have been demanding for them to be part of the service for quite sometime. Aside from that, it seems unlikely that Sony will be able to compete with Microsoft, since the competition has backwards compatibility.
Xbox One owners will be able to play with four free games, which was confirmed by Major Nelson, while PS4 owners are always stuck with two. Sony also releases free games for the PS3 and the PS Vita, but the former is a last-gen console that some fans are starting to abandon, while the latter is a handheld that Sony won’t be making games for anymore.
While the PS4 arguably has a better games library than the Xbox One, there’s no denying that the Xbox Games with Gold program is superior to the PlayStation Plus free games service. The fact that the latter now has the same price as Xbox Games with Gold might anger some fans, while others will be more understanding since they do get free games and exclusive deals.
That’s not to say the free games from Sony have been bad. Thanks to the service, indie developers? games get noticed by players that might have ignored them, so it’s actually a nice way to get some exposure. Still, it’s hard not to notice that Microsoft has given well-known mainstream titles in their service, which has ruffled some feathers of Sony fans.
How will Sony best Microsoft? Will they announce great PS Plus free games for September? Or will they stick to what they usually do? We will have to wait and see what happens.
