It seems like Sega is officially done with bad Sonic games. Not only did they announce a new 2D platformer called Sonic Mania in SDCC, but the company also revealed Project Sonic 2017 for PS4, Xbox One and the Nintendo NX, which is surprising. However, those who have seen the trailer got a sense of deja vu, since it looks less like a standalone game and more like Sonic Generations 2.
This might not come as a surprise for some, since it comes from the Sonic Generations development team. That being said, the similarities are eerie, as it features the modern version of Sonic once again teaming up with his adorable counterpart from the older 1990s games.
Now to be fair, it is doubtful any fan would complain if Project Sonic 2017 was a sequel to Sonic Generations, which it probably is. Sonic Generations received plenty of favorable reviews upon release, thanks to the great mix of modern and classic Sonic gameplay.
The development team also worked on Sonic Colors for the Wii, which is also considered by many as one of the best console Sonic games since Sonic Adventure. Unlike Generations, Sonic Colors only had one version of the Sega mascot, along with some colorful levels ? obviously ? and fun gameplay, which is why fans love it so much. Those with a Wii U and a Wii controller can still play the title if they really want to.
No gameplay footage of the new Sonic title was shown, so we will have to wait for further information. If it?s anything like Sonic Generations, which it probably is, then we can expect a nice mix of 3D and 2D levels. Since this is the 25th anniversary of the series, fans can expect a few levels that will pay tribute to the previous games, which is always appreciated.
Project Sonic 2017 will come out next year, though a release date is yet to be revealed. The title will come to the PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo NX, making it one of the few games to be announced for the mysterious console.
