Princess Diana Awards To Honor 80 Young Leaders

The 20th death anniversary of Princess Diana is set to happen in August of next year, and the Diana Award charity hopes that the upcoming Diana Awards ceremony this 4th of July will be the start of ?a series of commemorations?.

According to People, 80 young leaders, whose ages range from 10 to 19, will be honored ?for their roles in four categories of social action ? as local campaigners, fundraisers, supporting mentors and anti-bullying campaigners.? The Diana Awards will be handed out by Charles Spencer, the brother of Princess Diana, and will be a first for her immediate family.

People quotes Tessy Ojo, chief executive of the Diana Award charity, as saying that the Earl Spencer is ?looking forward to meeting the young people who are mentoring in their schools. There’s that recognition that her legacy is about compassion, service and about young people. He says this is what his sister was all about.”

While this is the first time that a member of Diana?s immediate family will be part of the awards-giving, Prince William and Prince Harry have been involved in it in one way or another. People notes that the Duke of Cambridge has backed the charity by participating in anti-bullying workshops run by the charity, while Prince Harry has been working on children affected by HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa with his charity, Sentebale. Princess Diana, of course, was famously known for her work to end HIV and AIDS.

Even the Earl Spencer has been supportive of the charity behind the scenes, says Ojo. According to her, Spencer has been ?inviting award winners to visit his ancestral home, which is also Diana’s resting place.?

Ojo was also excited about what this personal participation will mean for the young people being honored at the Diana Awards ceremony. She tells People “For the young people it’s exciting. A lot of them would not know Diana, and the only link to her is by seeing the princes or knowing about them. For them, it is extra special because they can receive the award from a direct family member.?
