AMC?s new series Preacher which stars Dominic Cooper as the morally conflicted small-town preacher, Jesse Custer, wasn?t the first choice for the role. In fact, the producers originally tapped James Franco.
When you think about it, Franco as Jesse would seem perfect. He has the look of Jesse from Garth Ennis? comics, and he already has some experience playing bizarre roles. Producers Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen even said that he was very ?Jesse-ish.? But Cooper?s already doing a great job at it and we couldn?t imagine the character being portrayed by anyone else at this point.
Franco being considered for the role was revealed by the producers at the show?s San Diego Comic-Con panel, Slash Film reports. Goldberg said, ?We had a nice conversation with James Franco at one point. He looks very Jesse-ish. He was into it but just literally he has to make 4,000 things in 20 different formats. It would take up his time and he wouldn?t be able to do a Tori Spelling movie or whatever the hell he was going to do.?
While Rogen added that the talk with Franco for the role was years ago and at that time, the show was only undergoing its initial stages. Plus, it will be difficult to get Franco to star in a series that could run for several seasons. So their talks about him playing the role were never serious. Cooper was their guy. ?[Franco] was dangling from a crane in Venice at the time so he couldn?t work us in,? Rogen said jokingly. ?I think that was even before, that was in a very preliminary phase.?
The supernatural series just aired its penultimate episode on Sunday and the 10th and final episode of its freshman run will air this July 31.
The Preacher Season 1 finale airs this Sunday, 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
