Unown has been a hot commodity ever since Niantic rolled out the Generation 2 update February this year. Everyone wants to capture it, but even truly dedicated Pokemon GO players are having a hard time catching the creature. It’s incredibly rare that it does not hatch from eggs. It does not seemingly nest either. But it looks like the mysterious Pokémon is finally spawning more frequently than normal. Has it?
Claims that there may have increased Unown spawn rates stemmed from The Silph Road subreddit. In a thread titled “Has the Unown spawn rate been subtly increased?” Reddit user Preachey cited that its city-wide scanner indicated there has been a boost in Unown spawn rates lately.
“Where I live has a city-wide scanner, and between Gen 2’s release and last Friday, we had seen a total of 12 Unown. Since Friday, we’ve had an additional 5, taking the total number to 17,” he wrote. The additional 5 is said to be almost 1/3 of the spawns since Unown was released to the game.
Some Redditors responded to the query, saying there have been little to no increase in Pokemon GO Unown spawn rates in their city recently. But others had similar observations to Preachey upon checking their spawn point.
“6 spawned in Taipei all of the sudden two days ago within a span of 24 hours. Pretty unusual because it’s been silent for a few days too,” one user from Taiwan claimed.
“We have a city scanner and there was usually one every few weeks and yesterday there were 3 within 6hours,” another from Lake Forest, California said.
Unfortunately, it’s still too early to make any conclusions at this point. What we do know, though, is that there are 26 Unown letters–A through Z. These are available in the game and they can all be found the regular way–good old luck. Unless we’re mistaken, there is no particular place where the mysterious Pokemon is more likely to spawn, and no place where it can’t spawn.
What Increased Unown Pokemon GO Spawn Rates Could Mean
People, according to Kotaku, are finding Unown in somewhat ordinary cities like Sydney and Milwaukee. This means players do not have to break travel to the Mayan ruins or somewhere else to spot them. But if there’s indeed an increase in Pokemon GO Unown spawn rates, there could be a possible Legendary Pokémon event in the pipeline.
Here’s what Necr0maNc3R, a fellow trainer on TheSilphRoad subreddit, thinks it’s all about:
“Once the [Legendary] events finally happen, we will all be able to catch the legendary pokemon we have waited so long for! But then what? Assuming the events are held at predetermined locations like major cities, you will travel to that location, wait for it to spawn, fight/catch it once, then go home? Is that all? That may be worth it for most who would go out of their way to travel to these events, but wouldn’t you be hoping for a little more to do once you got there? The opportunity to catch Unown would provide even more incentive to go to the event, and something else to do once you actually get there! It would be a sort of mini game/scavenger hunt to do while waiting/before leaving.”
Of course, this is a mere theory but it’s not far-fetched at all. It’s worth noting that Unown has always been connected with Legendary Pokémon in the Pokémon universe be it the third Pokemon film Spell of the Unown: Entei or the Arceus event at the Sinjoh Ruins in HeartGold and SoulSilver.
As Necro noted, Niantic is clever and they have a reason to everything they do in Pokemon GO. Therefore, an Unown mini event/game connected to a Legendary event seems very, very likely.
What do you think? Have you noticed an increased Pokemon GO Unown spawn rates too? Do you think it has something to do with a special event? Or, has Niantic completely forgot about Unown?
