Summer will be an exciting time for Pokemon GO players not only because there’s an upcoming event, but also because it coincides with the game’s first anniversary. Indeed, Niantic has already teased it will be “legendary” so we can definitely expect big updates. Although it’s keeping its lips sealed about the specifics, we’ve already got a few clues as to what features the Pokemon GO Summer 2017 event is bringing to the game. Let’s take a look at them below.
Massive Pokemon GO Gym Overhaul
This has been a long-promised update by Niantic that has yet to arrive in the game. While we don’t know exactly when the gym overhaul will take place, comments from the developer itself indicate that it could be coming anytime soon.
We can recall Niantic CEO John Hanke announced there will be four major updates this year with Gen 2 being the first. He didn’t provide the exact release dates but it will likely be spread out in a way where players would get a new major update every three months. The company rolled out the Generation 2 update on February 16th which is already over three months ago, so it makes sense that the Gym update would arrive soon.
Plus, a new app update added a ton of new gym-related stuff to the game’s code, making this claim all the more possible. So, what can we expect from the new Gym system?
According to Redditor dronpes, there could be a new limit on the Pokemon of the same species deployed to the gym. “Pokemon of the same species will be prevented from being deployed at gyms where their co-species defenders already sit,” the user wrote. “Certain potential elements of the gym update” may include remote combat via healing and push alerts.
PvP Pokemon GO Battles
Inter-player battles have been one of the many staples of Pokemon GO that has yet to find their way to the AR monster-catching game. As usual, how Niantic will execute the PvP action for the mobile game is still a mystery. But Niantic’s Vice President of Strategic Partnerships Mathieu de Fayet has revealed in a recent interview that Pokemon GO “needs to create social interactions between players.” He added that the player battles and Legendary Pokemon are at the top of the list of priorities for future updates of the game which then leads us to the next item.
Pokemon GO Legendary Release via Raids
Niantic already guaranteed that the long-awaited Legendary Pokemon would make their way to the game this year and this could be made possible through the Pokemon GO raids. In MMORPGs, raids are basically just players working together to take down AI-controlled enemies. It’s unclear at this point what form of raids Niantic will add in, but many expect this will pit players against some powerful creatures that we have yet to see in the game. And it’s very plausible that the Legendary Pokemon themselves would be the biggest reward.
This has been teased in the first trailer of Pokemon GO, which featured Mewtwo. If we’re lucky, the feline-like creature could very well be the first Legendary to grace the game. If not, it could be the flying trio– Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres. Apart from the four, Mew, Gen 2’s Legendary canines Raikou, Entei, Suicune and final Pokédex entries Lugia, Ho-oh and Celebi are also missing from the game.Regardless, we’re looking forward to seeing the first Legendary Pokemon arrive in the game.
