Bluehole and Brendan Greene’s title has definitely made itself known in just a few months of its run. The free-for-all battle royale, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, has recently placed itself as the third most played Steam game. It even defeated Rockstar’s GTA 5 which is known for its endless replay value and online platform.
As seen on SteamCharts, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is currently ranked third in their top games list. Meanwhile, GTA 5 is two spots away from PUBG. H1Z1: King of the Hill and the four-player heist game, Payday 2, takes the fourth and fifth place, respectively.
In PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, a match can go up to a hundred players in a map. The player’s objective in this game is to be the last person standing in a free-for-all player vs player experience. Even non-gamers are enticed to play this title as it features gameplay that’s reminiscent of “death game” movies like The Hunger Games and Battle Royale. Many developers have tried this formula, like ARK and H1Z1, but it seems that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has become the best one there is.
On Steam’s top peak concurrent players charts, the famous free-for-all battle royale game is just behind two of Valve’s e-sport titles: Dota 2 and Counter Strike Global Offensive. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds still has a chance to take the number one spot as it’s just 20,000 active players away from CSGO and is already half of Dota 2’s active player base.
For now, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds still has much to improve and focus on as it’s still eyeing a full release at the end of 2017. Due to its large player base, the title has the potential to become a new eSports title or become the next most played non-eSport staple like GTA 5 previously was.
