Hot on the heels of the Orange Is The New Black Season 5 leak, a new report claims that Pirates of The Caribbean 5 Dead Men Tell No Tales has been released illegally online ahead of its world premiere later this month. The latest leak comes merely days after hackers held the final installment of the Pirates saga hostage earlier this week.
According to Softpedia, two copies have been uploaded to The Pirate Bay thus far as a result of the studio’s refusal to pay a ransom. The links were reportedly taken down from the site but new copies of the film were uploaded again not long after. The publication hasn’t posted screenshots from the supposed leaked movie for verification, but it says one of the torrent links presumably with a BluRay quality is 54 GB in size while the other is only 754 MB.
Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed Monday that leaksters who claims to have access to two big Disney films threatened to release it unless the company paid a ransom. According to him, the hackers will release five minutes of the movie initially, to be followed by 20-minute chunks until the studio meets their demands. The studio isn’t paying and will work with federal investigators instead.
Iger did not disclose the amount and the title of the film, but sources told Deadline it was Pirates of The Caribbean 5 due to premiere on May 26. Although not explicitly named, Cars 3 is believed to be the other movie that the cybercriminals may have managed to steal. The latter film is scheduled to hit the big screens on June 16.
The Dark Overlord
Two weeks ago, a hacker also uploaded 10 episodes of Orange Is the New Black Season 5 to The Pirate Bay. The season premiere circulated on the torrent site first. Episodes 2-10 were subsequently posted the next day after Netflix declined to pay an undisclosed amount. The OITNB leak came six weeks ahead of the series’ official June 9 launch.
The hacker responsible for illegally uploading the Netflix series goes by the name of “The Dark Overlord”. It first appeared online last summer and has been very busy in the past few months breaking into corporate networks. From what we know, it specialized in health care hacks before it started targeting the Entertainment industry.
Apart from OITNB, The Dark Overlord claims to have stolen other web/TV series from Fox and HBO too. However, it’s unclear at this time how it got a copy of the shows and whether he is the same person responsible for the Pirates 5 leak. His/Her connection to the WannaCry ransomware attack that affected more than 300,000 computers in more than 150 countries since Friday hasn’t been confirmed at this point either.
