Admittedly, Pacific Rim 2 didn’t get off to a great start. Guillermo del Toro, director and the film’s co-writer, was supposed to return during the follow up. But the movie production encountered so many delays. This induced Del Toro to back out and move on with another project, The Shape of Water. This is when Steven S. DeKnight took on the reins and became the sequel’s director instead.

After a couple of obstacles along the way it seems like Pacific Rim 2 is well on its way. Derek Connolly (Jurassic World) is reportedly penning the script while John Boyega (Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens) was cast as Stacker Pentecost, son of Idris Elba’s character from the original film. Latest update reveal that principal photography is now in the works. Boyega was so excited about these recent developments that he posted a snapshot of his script cover on his Instagram. Now the title is confirmed, Pacific Rim: Maelstrom.

Plot Details Top Secret

Even though the title has already been confirmed, the creators are still unwilling to give out any details pertaining to the sequel’s storyline. We’re not yet sure if DeKnight will continue Del Toro’s plans such as having Kaiju-obsessed Dr. Newton Geizler played by Charlie Day to become an antagonist in the movie. A lot of newbies are also expected to be included in the Maelstrom cast. Fans may recall that Stacker Pentecost died in the prequel and Charlie Hunnam said he’s not coming back to play the role of Raleigh Becket due to conflicting schedules. Even Mako Mori’s character played by Rinko Kikuchi is still uncertain.

Other stars that can be expected in the movie’s second installment are Scott Eastwood (Suicide Squad); singer Cailee Spaeny; Jian Tian, who will also be in next year’s The Great Wall and Kong: Skull Island; Levi Meaden (Aftermath) and Adria Arjona (True Detective). The creative team behind the film were sure to cast some diverse and fresh-faced talents to spice up the sequel. These plus an awesome writer and director, here’s hoping the upcoming film will not disappoint.

Pacific Rim: Maelstrom is expected to be released on February 23, 2018. For more of the Pacific Rim 2 news and latest updates, keep it here on TheBitBag. Hit us with your feedback in the comments below.
