Overwatch Lead Writer Mitchell Chu has recently appeared on the game’s subreddit to do an “Ask Me Anything” session. Chu repeatedly expressed interest to feature each Overwatch hero in an animated short. So far, most of the shorts include the older heroes.
Animated Shorts For Each Hero
Chu answered many Overwatch questions from the fans on the Overwatch subreddit thread. Among his answers, here’s one directly about the plan for giving each character an animated short:
“I wish I could say that all the heroes are going to get their own animated shorts, but it’s impossible to predict the future. In my dreams, we’d get every hero one, as we have stories we are dying to tell about all of them.”
While Chu expressed interest, he may not have the authority to decide any plans for the future Overwatch animated short releases. Fans are at least happy to know that somebody in the Overwatch team will make them if given the chance.
More Overwatch Backstories
Most of Chu’s posts in the AMA is geared towards expanding each character’s backstory. Their focus on backstories also reflects much on the plot of the animated shorts. The Overwatch characters are featured in these animated shorts mostly cover their operations or backstory to introduce them to the players. However, their future plans outside their current goals aren’t discussed yet. It’s possible that we’ll keep getting more backstories for the next Overwatch heroes like Doomfist.
“We’re Just Getting Started”
Chu also mentioned that they release new heroes with only a few hints to their backstories. This was done to keep each character’s introduction simple and avoid trying to “throw all the story out there for story’s sake.” Design-wise, this is understandable as players might not extensively care about a character’s origins on release. Perhaps we can expect Overwatch to have character development even if its core gameplay involve shooting each other than directly interacting.
Potential Animated Short Candidates
Chu is also excited to work on stories of the other heroes and even the Talon Organization. So far, the newer Overwatch heroes age like Lucio, Symmetra, D.Va and Pharah could be in the next animated short. Meanwhile, the Talon Organization could also use some screen time as Reaper, Widowmaker, and Sombra barely talk about it in-game and in animated shorts. For now, we’ll just have to wait for the next animated shorts, comics, and other Overwatch promotional content to see where this game’s story goes.
