Doomfist is now available to play but even before his release, we already knew a few things about the Talon agent. To the surprise of many, Doomfist wasn’t voiced by Terry Crews and fans had a few questions regarding the voice acting of the character in Overwatch. It is only until recently that we get to hear the reason why Crews isn’t the designated voice for Doomfist.
The voice of Doomfist in Overwatch fell at the hands of veteran actor and director Sahr Ngaujah. Months before the reveal of Doomfist, it was almost certain that it was Terry Crews who set out to voice the character. All signs were pointing to him landing the role but sadly, fans didn’t get what they want. Ngaujah gives justice to Doomfist though but fans are just probably wanting Crews to be part of the game somehow.
Gamespot reports that Overwatch director Michael Chu revealed in a Q&A panel the reason why Ngaujah was chosen over Crews.
“We love Terry. Terry’s awesome. He came and visited us. We had a great time. But when we were looking for Doomfist, we were looking for something very specific given his role in the game and everything. When we were early in the audition process, we heard Sahr, who’s the actor who plays Doomfist, and he just blew us away immediately. Once we heard his voice, it was like, ‘Holy crap. That’s Doomfist,” says Chu.
This doesn’t mean that Crews will never be a part of Overwatch in the future. Since there are still characters to come to the game, the actor could still be chosen to voice someone else. We’ve all seen Crews in wacky roles and having him placed as a serious Talon agent would’ve probably sounded different. When and if Blizzard does give him a role, we’re hoping that it’s for a character more fitting of his personality.
