Blizzard might’ve made fans nervous by confirming the anniversary event by Overwatch at this late a stage but the developer has finally done it. Blizzard recently confirmed a few things about how they’ll celebrate the anniversary of Overwatch and things are looking pretty good so far. Aside from a few new things to get into, Blizzard has other non-event related changes in the Overwatch anniversary event.
Game Director Jeff Kaplan revealed a few more things coming to the game during the Overwatch anniversary, which could delight a lot of fans who are egging to get some new specific cosmetic items in the game. In an interview with Polygon, Kaplan details a few changes they’re planning for the loot boxes in the game.
The change isn’t that major though but it’s still sure to delight fans. According to Kaplan, Blizzard will refresh the game’s standard loot boxes by adding a few new things. Once the Overwatch anniversary, loot boxes will have laughing and sitting emotes for post-release characters Sombra and Orisa. This change comes after several requests from the game’s community.
Players are going to be hunting for loot boxes once the anniversary finally arrives. We can expect event-exclusive cosmetic items from the anniversary event as well. What’s good about the upcoming Sombra and Orisa cosmetic items is that they aren’t exclusive to the event.
Aside from this, there’s very little we know about the upcoming Overwatch anniversary event. Blizzard did announce a few things about the event including the start and end date. According to the developer, the event will start on May 23 and will last until June 12.
Blizzard also revealed the anticipated Overwatch Game of the Year Edition which includes the base game and several bonuses. The Game of the Year Edition includes the following:
- 10 Loot Boxes
- Vintage Blackwatch Reyes, Strike-Commander Morrison, Overgrown Bastion, Security Chief Phara, and Slipstream Tracer skins.
- Tracer for Heroes of the Storm
- Baby Winston pet for World of Warcraft
- Mercy’s wings for Diablo III
- Tracer, Reaper, Pharah, Winston, Bastion, and Soldier: 76, portraits for StarCraft II
- Overwatch-themed card back for Hearthstone
Blizzard notes that more details about the event will be coming soon. Since it’s only a few days away now, we can expect Blizzard to reveal the other things coming on the game’s anniversary.
