After the surprise positive reactions of the first game, the announcement of Outlast 2 pleased many horror fans. However, it seemed like Australia wasn’t going to get the game due to one sexually disturbing scene, but that suspiciously cleared up. The game is now clear for an international release, making fans suspicious about what was done to clear things.

For those unaware, IGN Australia stated that the horror sequel was refused classification after a “ritualistic orgy” was deemed sexually violent. Given the details of said scene, it is definitely sexual violence and adds to the game’s uneasy tone. Now it seems like the game will be getting an AU release, with an R-18 rating coming with it.

Only One Outlast 2

Developer Red Barrels confirmed that Outlast 2 would be getting a hard R-18 rating, whilst also stating that we would only see one version of the game. Australia has been notorious for its censorship of video games, like removing the “abortion” scene from South Park: The Stick of Truth. While the country finally allowed games to get an R rating, titles like Saint’s Row 4 still haven’t been released in that country.

This has made fans question if there was any content from the game that was cut to please all regions. It is odd to see how the game automatically passed for a new rating after the second test, since the first one failed.

“The original submission of Outlast 2 sent to the Australian Classification Branch contained the final game code and a video file for reference taken from an Alpha version of the game,” Red Barrels said in a press release. “This video file should not have been sent along with the game code, as its content was not representative of the final game.”

“In the second submission, the same game code was submitted with a video file reflecting the final game content. The game was then approved for release with an R18+ rating.”

Aside from the sexual violence, there’s a very real possibility that even more of the game’s horror scenes were cut to appease all regions, though this hasn’t been confirmed.

Return To Less Horror?

While not the most mainstream game out there, the original Outlast scared many a fan and eventually gained a following. This means that expectations for Outlast 2 are going to be big, given the amount of years it took to make. However, the possibility of cut content has made fans anxious about the game’s scare factor, since some scenes might have been cut or reduced.

Promising to be even scarier than the first game, fans were really looking forward to the latest first-person horror title. Games like Outlast and Amnesia partially inspired the new direction for Resident Evil 7, making it one of the year’s earliest surprise hits. It’s been a good year for fans of the horror genre, but censorship and international pleasing might make this title less scary.

Outlast 2 is slated for an April 25 release on PS4, Xbox One and Windows PC. Fans won’t have to wait too long to play it or scream with their favorite YouTubers.
