Outlander Season 3 hasn’t even aired yet, but we already have some casting information about its fourth season which will surely relieve you from “Droughtlander.” Starz has just cast two adorable Northern Inuit puppies as its Rollo, the wolf hybrid that becomes a beloved member of the Fraser clan. Yes, they are just as cute as you would expect but they hold a very important role next season. Spoilers ahead!
Who is Rollo?
Introduced in Drums of Autumn, the fourth book in the Outlander series, Rollo is Ian Murray’s trusted wolf-hybrid sidekick he won in a card game. In the novel, young Ian met the half-wolf from a game of dice in Charleston, June 1767. The Fraser family, especially Ian’s aunt, Claire, is apprehensive at the beginning, having a bad history with wolves from the early years of her marriage to Jamie Fraser. But as author Diana Gabaldon explained, they have ultimately accepted Rollo who “became a member of the ever-growing Fraser family.”
For a dog that is half wolf and half Irish Wolfhound, Rollo is rather a tame creature. But his wolf could come out when placed in certain situations like in a fight or while hunting. The dog is described as having a “penchant for getting into trouble, often sticking his large, wet nose into places it doesn’t belong.”
“They look cute but tough. They should be just right to play Rollo when the time comes,” Gabaldon told Entertainment Weekly. “They’d need to growl and look menacing on command, I think, and carry back prey of one kind or another to their master. I assume they wouldn’t let them catch things on camera … especially fish, of course.”
What is his significance on Outlander Season 4?
Specifics on how important Rollo will be in the TV series are scarce, but a Starz spokesman claimed: “the dog will play a key part in the adventure that lies ahead.” Those adventures remain to be seen as well. What we do know is that Rollo proves to be a faithful companion to Ian in the books.
He accompanies his master when hunting, albeit alone or with local Indians Ian has befriended while accompanying John Quincy Myers through the backcountry. When Ian falls ill from the measles, Rollo loyally stays close to him and when his master chooses to stay in Snaketown and marry Wakyo’teyehsnonhsa, he stays with him too.
Rollo was completely devoted to Ian from day one to the day he died.
Outlander Season 4
Outlander Season 4 is still in the early stages, which means the writers are likely still writing. Regardless, the puppies will start their training now for Season 4 with animal handler David Stewart, so when filming starts they will know what to do. Production dates have yet to be confirmed but if the show follows its Season 3 timeline, filming for Season 4 should commence this August and will continue through June 2018 for a fall premiere.
