The second to the last episode of Orange Is the New Black Season 4 was undeniably a huge one. What the majority of us are questioning now is why that climactic death needed to happen? And why did it have to be Poussey?
In the series? most recent season, there was a fight between the prison officers and the inmates, which led to a dismaying death of a fan favorite character, Poussey, who is played by Samira Wiley. She was killed by Bayley (Alan Aisenberg). Loyal viewers were devastated, just like the majority of the prisoners from the series. Poussey?s dying was greater than we could expect in a show, considering that she was one of the most optimistic characters on the series.
When asked about her reaction when she found out that her character was going to die, Wiley revealed that she was shocked upon learning it at first. She revealed that there were people who thought that she personally requested to be out of the show. The actress said this is actually very far from the truth. It was also news to her. But when she learned that they were trying to tell a Black Lives Matter story, she felt honored and challenged at the same time.
In the last episode in Orange is the New Black Season 4 that we have seen so far also showed the late Poussey as she lined up for a job. Judy King, played by Blair Brown, suggested that she will be blessed with a bright future. This scene made the character’s death a lot more depressing.
Wiley also revealed having a conversation with Jenji Kohan, the creator of the show, about her character. She noted that one thing which was stated is that Poussey is a character that has the highest chance of obtaining a good future. Death had to happen to someone who had a future so it did hurt so much.
