The so-called “flagship killer” company OnePlus did not announce any device at the Mobile World Congress last month, but that does not mean it has nothing up its sleeve for 2017. In fact, recent leaks reveal a new device is already in the works and as with the company’s previous products, this one’s set to be stunner specifications-wise. Let’s take a look at what the next OnePlus device might offer, according to the leak.
OnePlus 5 Specs
Dubbed OnePlus 5, the company’s next-generation flagship will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor, built using 10nm manufacturing process. This alone already positions the handset parallel to Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus which carries the same chip. It will be coupled with a massive 8GB RAM and 64GB of built-in storage that can be expanded via a microSD card slot.
If the claim is accurate, it bests the previous 6GB benchmark set by Huawei’s Honor 8 Pro and OnePlus’s own OnePlus 3. They won’t be the first though, as ASUS already offers such specification in its Zenfone AR. It won’t be too surprising as well, given One Plus’ history of releasing a device with unprecedented RAM configuration. We can recall it launched OnePlus 3T with 6GB RAM during the time when only 4GB devices dominated the smartphone market.
As for its design, the latest leak suggests it will sport a much sleeker frame and an improved display. According to reports, OnePlus 3T’s successor is coming with a 5.5-inch Quad HD AMOLED display, although there are contradicting ones which claim it’ll jump to WQHD (2,560 x 1,440 pixels) screen to “stay relevant” in the competitive Android smartphone market.
We’re yet to see if it goes in the same bezel-free direction with Samsung. However, with the Galaxy S8 display’s good reception, it’s logical for the company to reduce the bezels of its next flagship. We can also expect a glass or ceramic back for its flagship device.
Camera and More
Camera-wise, earlier reports say the 2017 flagship would feature a 23-megapixel main camera. It will have retina flash and a 16MP front camera for selfies. Although it is likely to sport a dual camera setup as well–a new smartphone trend of late. Regardless, the device should run Android 7.0 Nougat with OxygenOS skin right out of the box. Other things expected are wireless charging, at least a 3,000mAh battery, USB Type-C port, and fast-charging capability.
OnePlus 5 Edge – Is This the Flagship Killer of 2017?
OnePlus is said to come in two versions: one with a normal screen and a new “Edge” variant with curved screen edges. We can expect all the mentioned specs to be present in the premium version, although there should be improvements in some. Details about OnePlus 5 Edge remain sparse, but a few publications report it would differ in terms of battery, size, and display quality. Furthermore, it will be water and dust proof (IP68).
A concept video of the premium variant surfaced recently, showcasing the powerful specs mentioned above and more. It has a curved display on the sides similar to some of Samsung’s phones and three capacitive buttons just below the display. Its home button is actually a company logo which lights up when pressed. As rumored, it features dual cameras, the same Snapdragon 835 SoC, a larger 4,100 mAh battery and metal and glass build.
Although the existence of the “Edge” model remains unconfirmed, the concept video seems plausible. It’s featured in three colors: “Midnight Black”, “Gun Metal”, and “Soft Gold”. Check out the video below.
The next OnePlus device is expected to cost between $400 and $500, but it has no release date yet. The company has no launch schedule either. The OnePlus One arrived in April 2014, its successor in July 2015, and then OnePlus 3 in June 2016.
Since OnePlus phones are considered flagship killers, the OnePlus 5 will likely hit the stores around the same time as Galaxy S8, HTC 11, and LG G6. That should be sometime in May or June.
