ONE Championship: Angela Lee Makes More Money Than UFC Champ & Contender

By on

Angela Lee, the Atomweight Champion of ONE Championship, is reportedly earning more than UFC Strawweight Champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Invicta FC champ and UFC contender Cristiane Justino. She is only 20 years old and is poised to be a star according to One Championship founder and chairman, Chatri Sityodtong.

As reported by Nick Baldwin of Bloody Elbow, Lee was surprised of the contract offer after she won her title bid. She revealed this in The MMA Circus saying, ?I am just a 20-year-old kid. Being able to have that kind of support and know that I?m making that kind of income is really nice. Especially women, they don?t get paid equally in this world. It?s kind of awesome to see that ONE Championship is taking a step forward because in Asia, it?s really bad.?

In a May 12th social media post by Sityodtong, he announced that he was pleased that Lee?s new contract (after the fight) makes her one of the world?s highest-paid female athletes in MMA. That includes all other organizations – Invicta and the UFC.

Lee is now 6-0 having won all of her fights except her last one via submission. In her last bout, veteran Mei Yamaguchi (having 25 total MMA fights coming in) took Lee to the distance. Brian Knapp of Sherdog branded the match as a Fight of the Year contender. Lee managed to fight under adversity in the third round of their fight as she was floored by an overhand right. She came back in the championship rounds attacking with everything in her arsenal of submissions. She failed to submit Yamaguchi though much like all other opponents–she had not been stopped once. Lee settled for a unanimous decision to win the inaugural ONE Championship women?s atomweight (115 pounds) title. She is also the youngest person to win an MMA title in the professional level at 19.

At 20, Lee has a bright future ahead. The Canadian-American fights out of Singapore with Evolve MMA. She also fought as a strawweight. Will we ever see a women?s atomweight division in the UFC? Will she be the next Ronda Rousey or Paige Van Zant? Or will she be her own Angela Lee? It certainly looks like the latter.
