Nintendo apparently has a new patent showing a possible NX console with no disc drive. This could be a bad thing for gamers as it is rumored that it?s the NX that might not have a disc drive.
Though there are still no details about Nintendo?s upcoming new console, which is only dubbed as ?NX?, but there are news that a patent was found that is shedding some light about the upcoming Nintendo console.
Now just a reminder that the info that you will be reading are still based on rumors and Nintendo still has not announced any details about NX aside from confirming that they are currently developing the new console. So take all of these info with a grain of salt.
A thread from NeoGAF shows an official USD patent that shows a new hardware that has the functions and feature that of a gaming console, with only one missing component; it lacks a disc drive
We quoted the abstract of the patent?s summary from the thread poster to give an overview about the patented hardware:
An example system includes an internal hard disk drive storing a program and/or data, a communication unit transmitting/receiving a program and/or data via a network, and a processor executing a program stored in the hard disk drive to perform game processing. The example system is not provided with an optical disk drive for reading out a program and/or data from an optical disk.
So there is a chance that the NX will not have any optical drive at all, it could be possible that all games will be available digitally and can be purchased online, or its games will be available through a different medium, like through an SD card inserted to a card slot, which would bring back cartridges to home consoles.
This is not the only news about consoles having to ditch disc-based games, Microsoft tried to make this approach with the Xbox One, but the fans backlashed at the idea, resulting for Microsoft to return the optical drive back.
It will be a hard time for Nintnedo if they really planning to ditch the optical drive as more games are getting larger disk size and most of the current gen consoles still have lesser storage capacities to cater to a large library of games.
