It might have taken a bit longer than expected, but fans are finally going to get a new Oddworld game, one that might be darker than those that preceded it. Oddworld: Soulstorm will launch sometime in 2017, though the platforms it will be released on have not yet been revealed.
According to the official Oddworld website, Soulstorm will take place after Rupture Farms has been overthrown. What seemed like a good idea at the time has now led to severe consequences, as Abe and 300 Mudokons no longer have food, water or a place to call home.
In a way, Oddworld: Soulstorm is kind of a reboot. This new Oddworld game is going to be a reimagining of what happened in the original Abe?s Oddysee game that came out on the original PlayStation, but with a darker twist.
The site also stated that Abe has gone through a lot since the last time we saw him. Currently, blurry images of the Oddworld protagonist can be seen. They will be revealed if the site gets enough followers on Twitter, which is an interesting way to show the character.
Developer Oddworld Inhabitants has promised that the game will break new ground in the Oddworld series. It promised innovative new mechanics, an epic tale and new devices, which should be interesting.
Fans of the series know that this isn?t the first time the Oddworld series has gone dark. The Xbox-exclusive game Oddworld: Stranger?s Wrath was actually given a mature rating as it is filled with plenty of death and violence despite the colorful characters and fun use of animal ammo.
This new Oddworld game looks like it will be an interesting installment in the series and could be a turning point for future games. There?s still plenty of time to see how it will be like, since it?s going to be released next year, but fans can only hope it leads to good things.
