We’re days away from Fox’s 2017-18 schedule announcement. While the signs of New Girl Season 7 getting canceled are mounting, the odds that it’s getting picked up for another season is apparently bigger than we’ve initially assumed.
TV show tracker Cancel Bear suggests renewal is more likely for the Elizabeth Meriwether comedy series than cancellation. In its final prediction about the network’s 2017-2018 lineup, it indicated that New Girl has a 78 percent chance of getting another green light, falling behind Gotham and Family Guy which have a 90-and 100-percent chance, respectively.
Apart from New Girl, comedies Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Last Man on Earth, and Son of Zorn remain likely pickups as well. This should be a relief for all fans who have been biting their nails awaiting Fox’s confirmation.
Talks of the show not returning next season spread like wildfire among viewers following Jake Johnson’s statement that the New Girl Season 6 finale doubles as a show finale in case of cancellation. The cast members’ other commitments and Zooey Deschanel’s pregnancy have also fueled speculations that Season 7 is longer happening.
Thankfully, they’re all still on board on the idea of Season 7. In fact, the showrunners already have suggestions on what the Jess, Cece (Hannah Simone) and the boys could end up next.
Where does it go from Season 6?
“Jess and Nick ended where they ended and we want to look at that and figure out how to make that play in some more interesting way. I think there’s still stuff that has to be done with all the characters,” executive producer Dave Finkle told Entertainment Weekly previously. “He’s the one character over the course of the series that I think required the most growth and where he is now is exciting, but I don’t think we’ve mined as much as we could possibly mine out of it.”
While Finkel is interested in Johnson’s character, fellow showrunner Brett Baer wants to see more of Winston (Lamorne Morris) at work and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) as a father. Following Winston’s engagement to Aly (Nasim Pedrad) last season, Baer would like to get back to doing more work stories for his character like “getting promoted at work and becoming a detective.”
As for Schmidt, who got married to Cece, he says: “I think that it’d be really, really fun – the way that it was fun to see Schmidt as a bridezilla – to see Schmidt as a helicopter daddy for his child and see what he’s like as a father.”
Fox and other major broadcast networks will announce their 2017-18 schedules the week of May 15. What do you think? Will there be a New Girl Season 7? Sound off in the comments below!
