Will there be a Season 7 of New Girl? We know it has only been weeks since New Girl Season 6 came to a close and it is still too soon to make a conclusion about the show’s fate. But for the record, Fox has not made a decision yet which obviously implies that cancellation is on the cards. While renewal is an option, too, clues from the cast and crew have begun to pile up and fans may not be happy about it.
Rumors of New Girl Season 7 cancellation started surfacing because of Jake Johnson, himself. The actor who plays the role of Nick Miller in the Fox sitcom expressed his doubts on the possibility of a renewal. At SXSW in March, he admitted the network hasn’t told them yet whether or not New Girl has been picked up for another run. But he did add that the story ended fine regardless of Fox’s decision.
“We shot a finale where, if this was the end, the core fan base would be OK,” he said, adding he thought it was done. Although he clarified later that it was just his own opinion and that the chances are still 50/50, many are already convinced that a seventh season will no longer be happening.
Here are some of the other hints that somehow points to New Girl Season 7 cancellation.
New Girl Season 6 Finale
Since its fate is still up in the air, showrunners made sure that the Season 6 finale ends at a place where viewers will be satisfied in case it doesn’t continue but leaves room for more story should it be renewed.
“We really wanted to make sure that we delivered an ending that could work in both directions,” executive producer Dave Finkel said in an interview. “If it was the series finale, that it answered a lot of questions, and then if it was just the season finale, there would be space to grow.”
Of course, his statement doesn’t mean necessarily goodbye but it doesn’t guarantee a comeback either.
Liz Meriwether, the show’s creator, is working on a new series for Fox titled Thin Ice, a female-centered comedy just like New Girl. New Projects usually never stop show creators like Joss Whedon, Shonda Rhimes, or J.J. Abrams from continuing old ones. In fact, most of them have had multiple shows running simultaneously before. However, for those who are looking for evidence that folks at New Girl have moved on, this is what you’ve been looking for.
Zooey Deschanel’s Pregnancy
We can recall that Zooey Deschanel (Jess) missed a couple of episodes in Season 5 due to pregnancy. When Deschanel decided to take maternity leave to bond with her new baby, her character, Jess, got called away for jury duty. Megan Fox‘s Regan stepped in as Jess’ subletter, adding a female voice to the loft filled with man-children.
Now that Zooey’s pregnant again, it’s certainly possible that Jess would take another break from the guys if the show gets the green light. Not that there’s anything wrong with parenting leave. In fact, fans would probably be more than okay with her spending quality time with her growing family. However, Jess is a vital part of the show. Although the show did well without her before, fans would prefer having the main lead around.
Revelation of Schmidt’s Name
There isn’t much about it, to be honest, and it’s not like the show only revolves around Max Greenfield’s character. However, tying up loose ends and solving long-questioned mysteries is just what final seasons do.
Everyone Is (Almost) Coupled Up
Schmidt and Cece (Hannah Simone) finally got married and moved out of the loft. Although Winston (Lamorne Morris) and Aly (Nasim Pedrad) haven’t made any decisions yet, they’ll more likely than not do the same when they eventually tie the knot. That leaves Jess and Nick in the apartment. We’ve yet to confirm but it’s kind of clear that the former couple is getting back together soon. If they do, will still there be a show after that?
Everyone living together is nothing new to sitcoms as we’ve had Friends and How I Met Your Mother. We’re curious how the show will do with a similar setting. As usual, we’ll have to wait and find out.
There are clearly a lot of factors at play. While everything mentioned does not prove anything at this point, it’s safe to ready one’s self for the bad news.
