Bad news, New Girl fans: we just got another sign that our favorite Fox sitcom may no longer return for one more season. Max Greenfield, who plays the role of Schmidt on the show, has just confirmed recently his next TV gig and it’s a pretty big one. Should we be worried?
American Crime Story executive producer Ryan Murphy broke the news on his Instagram page Friday that Greenfield has booked a role on the show’s third season officially titled The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. The casting news came as a first-look photo, featuring the New Girl actor in costume alongside co-star Darren Criss who will portray serial killer Andrew Cunanan on the show.
Greenfield confirmed his involvement in the series, sharing Murphy’s IG post on his Twitter page on the same day. The project marks the second time he will work with Murphy, whom he has already collaborated with in American Horror Story: Hotel. Greenfield notably played a recurring character named Gabriel on the show’s fifth season.
What His American Crime Story Casting Means For New Girl Season 7
The show hasn’t revealed Greenfield’s character yet. While we still don’t know how big of a role he holds in the show, we don’t think there is much to worry about it right now. He was a part of American Horror Story Season 5 too and that did not stop him from reprising his role as Schmidt in New Girl. Granted, of course, his AHS role was fairly minimal until the very end.
If his new acting gig indeed turns out to be a big one, it will still unlikely impede the actor’s ability to appear on the other series. New Girl Season 6 has just concluded, so Season 7 won’t premiere for a long while. Production would not start until later this summer as well, suggesting there’s a good chance for both shows to exist and for Greenfield to appear extensively in both.
We do understand where all the worries are coming from, though. For starters, it hasn’t been entirely clear if New Girl will be renewed or canceled. Some of the cast and crew have already started accepting new TV projects as well.
New Girl Season 7 Cancellation Likely?
As previously reported, Nasim Pedrad who takes on the role of Aly Nelson, Winston’s LAPD partner and fiancée, has joined People of the Earth Season 2 as a series regular. Series creator Liz Meriwether revealed that she, too, is working on a new comedy for Fox titled Thin Ice. While these do not necessarily mean cancellation especially since Pedrad’s not a regular on the sitcom, lead actors like Greenfield getting big roles somewhere else is entirely a different story.
The show’s diminishing ratings are not encouraging either. TV By The Numbers notes the network’s scripted series have fallen about 17 percent year to year. New Girl and three more of the six shows that have aired on Tuesdays this season averaged under a 1.0 rating among adults 18-49. This is probably why it’s taking a while for the network to make a decision about the show.
Whatever comes out of this, we’ll find out when Fox announces its 2017-2018 schedule next week, on May 15. Among those sitting on a bubble right now are 24 Legacy, Sleepy Hollow, The Exorcist, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Mick. Renewal for Wayward Pines, Rosewood, and The Last Man on Earth are still up in the air as well.
