NBA 2K18 finally has a cover athlete, and can be pre-ordered on PS4, Xbox One, PC and the Nintendo Switch. The latter console is quite surprising, since this means the title is getting a simultaneous release on all systems. Usually, ports for the Switch come out months after other versions, so this is a nice change of pace.

Maybe it’s not as surprising as we think, since the game was showcased on the console during it’s debut trailer. It’s good seeing the game get a simultaneous release on all systems, which hasn’t happened since the 6th gaming generation. Switch owners are hoping this becomes the norm, so that the console will gain more credibility in the future.

A Switch In Priorities

Aside from the Nintendo Switch version, NBA 2K18 will also have Kyrie Irving as the game’s regular cover athlete. Shaquille O’Neal will be the cover athlete for the Legend and Legend Gold editions of the basketball simulator. 2K Games did something similar last year, with Paul George as the regular cover athlete and Kobe Bryant for the Legend editions.

Irving has a pretty good track record, so fans should be pleased with him being the game’s cover athlete. Shaq is a legend who is still loved, so expect the two Legend editions of the game to sell well. Overall, it’s a best of both worlds scenario from 2K Games, catering to the hardcore and nostalgic basketball crowd.

Due to the simultaneous release on all consoles, it seems like the Switch version of NBA 2K18 will be fine. Players are really hoping that the game plays just as well as the console versions, and it could actually happen. At the least, 2K Games didn’t change the name of the game, unlike EA and the recent FIFA fiasco.

For those unaware, EA will be releasing a game called EA Sports FIFA for the Nintendo Switch, which proved controversial. Switch owners feel like they will be getting a bad port of FIFA 18, which is coming to PS4, Xbox One and PC. The new name has turned off many fans, since they think it will be a subpar effort from EA, hence not making it part of the main series.

NBA 2K18 is slated for a September 19 release for the PS4, Xbox One, Windows PC and the Nintendo Switch. The game can be pre-ordered here on the official NBA 2K18 site. Fans that pre-order any edition of the game get early access to the full title on September 15.
