The Minnesota Timberwolves? Karl-Anthony Towns is definitely a star on the rise. Today, the reigning rookie of the year was announced as the face of the NBA 2K17 Companion app. It?s notable because this year?s iteration will be the first to incorporate 2K?s new mobile face-scanning technology.
Scan Your Face with NBA 2K17 Companion App
In previous installments, players needed a Kinect or PlayStation Camera in order to get their likeness in game. This led to some pretty hilarious — and sometimes downright terrifying — results. This year, 2K is letting smartphones do all the work. While this is obviously a big bonus for 2K players, it?s also a huge hit for Microsoft and Sony. Face scanning was one of the few worthwhile reasons to pick up a camera for your console, so having it removed makes their purpose even smaller.
2K has yet to show the new technology in action, but if it can improve on the system used by their rival EA Sports in its NBA Live franchise, then it should be a winner.
Aside from the new face-scanning feature, the companion app will include a few features and tools to complement your NBA 2K17 experience. Users can manage their MyTeam roster remotely and purchase new cards via the in-app auction house. You can also browse and purchase new gear for your MyPlayer via the app as well. The MyTeam mobile card game also returns this year, giving players more chances to earn VC to spend in the base game.
The app will be available for download on September 8 on both the iOS and Google Play app stores. Meanwhile, the full?NBA 2K17 game releases on September 20 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
